Mingei arts in theory are hand crafted, folk art or arts of the people as defined by Yanagi Soetsu in 1927. The controversy now by scholars that it is a hybrid of occidental ideas which Bernard Leach 1887-1979 introduced in Japan in 1907, as a rediscovery of Japanese cultural origins, which in turn, this orientalism they applied to their own art and then projected to other oriental countries. The carvings are of Ebisu-wealth of the sea and patron to fishermen and Daikoku-Wealth of the soil and patron to the farmers. Both figures are set on a large carved rock work base. The long 14.25 inch fishing pole (Ebisu) has a rejoined split. (See photo 10) The condition of the figures and base is excellent. Base 20 x 10.5 x 2.50 inches. The figures 15 x 7.50 x7.25 inches. Well defined carvings of Japanese mythological figures.
