Magnificent! Large Greek amphora from the Greek colony of Apulia, located in present day Italy. This amazing piece of ancient art dates between 375 and 350 BC and if of a Naiskos, or tomb scene. In side the elaborate tomb sits the dearly departed make youth facing right, but with head turned to the let, nude and sitting on his himation. I've always liked Valdivia pieces from Ecuador. Considering that they are quite old, I think its the simplicity in design that attract me to them. What they represent, who knows? Did they represent ancestor spirits? Perhaps they represented the deceased? At any rate, this specimen is wonderful, has great size and displays well.
