| This is a genuine Egyptian sarcophagus, the wooden coffins shaped and decorated to represent the deceased on their way to the next life. In exceptionally good condition, dated to approx 600 BC, this is a wooden example, its occupant unknown, but simply and finely rendered with a red-brown painted face on a black ground, large and dramatic white eyes, and gold painted hieroglyphics down the front of the body area. It dates from approximately 2600 years B.P. during the twenty-sixth dynasty, or Saite Period, the start of the Late Period of ancient Egypt and the last gasp of their sophisticated and previously flourishing culture. A superb and unusual specimen, in fine condition, it stands approximately 69 inches high and is accompanied by a C-14 radiocarbon report from the Brussels Art Laboratory. | |
