| A simple viewing of the items offered by Traders Of The Lost Art clearly demonstrates our proclivity for offerings that evoke, not just the style, but the emotions of their creators. Indeed, we strive to assemble items that transcend the centuries and give you a view into the soul of the culture represented. Once offered in a major NY auction with a high estimate of $40,000, it's not often that a piece of this size is offered on the market. Standing a hair under 32", this wonderful artifact, surely created for a royal family, is one of the largest pre-Columbian items available on the market. It is a very large and impressive standing figure of a priest, made of hollow, buff terracotta. Clad in a loin cloth with frontal apron, belt with hanging element and flanking wings, each bearing an appliqué of clay threads forming profile jaguar heads. Also adorned with a triple tier, beaded necklace with center dangle, tubular ear ornaments and tied sandals on his feet. Hair is indicated by hollow drill circles and side lappets flank the head. Molded facial detail shows an open mouthed smile beneath realistic nose and incised eyes slightly sunken beneath low relief brows. Hands are held out at sides, left is empty and right clutches a small baston. Surface bears mineral deposits and some darkened firing clouds. As typical of Vera Cruz sculptures, reassembled from 30 or so original pieces with restoration over the breaklines and a bare minimal amount of new material. Minor loss to the base of one lappet and the fan-like element held to his left wrist by his bracelet. Mexico - Early Post Classic Periods, Vera Cruz, Mexico, Ca. 900-1100 A.D. | |
