| Authentic Olmec masks are one of the more difficult items to acquire. Indeed, finding one with the provenance of this lovely example are about as rare as flak jacket salesmen at a Dick Cheney Quail Hunt. From the La Blanca, Pacific Coast Region, Middle Preclassic, Ca.900-600 B.C. Greenish-black carved stone Olmec mask depicted with a squared face having a lively expression, the lips pulled tightly apart in a gentle smile showing gums, fulcrum indicated. Faintly raised lower lids and curving oval eyes with large pierced pupils, incised lid and straight brow, the rectangular ears incised and drilled, the top of the head and lower cheeks drilled for suspension, the reverse is deeply concave. Custom lucite stand. Intact, 5-1/2" H, exc. cond. A rare and beautiful example. Provenance: John-Platt/Daniel M. Friedenberg collection, acquired in 1980 from Fine Arts of Ancient Lands, Exhibited: Denver Art Museum,1987; National Museum of Woman, Washington, D.C.,1988.
