Spectacular Jamacoaque Double Vessel
This is a spectacular piece! I've always found Jamacoaque figures to be very expressive. The Jamacoaque culture thrived in what is present day Ecuador. They were noted traders; with examples of their trade networks spreading from ancient Western Mexico to the North, to the cultures of present day Peru to the south. Much has been made of the connection of some of their pieces to those of Western Mexico. That is exactly what attracted me to this piece. Look at the dynamic pose, with fluid motion AND compare that to the famous Jalisco Warriors with their barrel armor. I find the similarities to be striking. Naturally, the Jamacoaque vessels often have an olla attached, as it is with this stunning piece. Overall, this larger jama piece, standing at roughly 11-1/2" tall and 17" deep, also turns heads while occupying a display pedestal. The intriguing face and accouterments add to the visual impact. Overall great condition, with some field repairs between the olla and the figure (as noted in the photos). Ca 500 BC-AD 500.
