Choice Apulian Amphora
Magnificent! Large Greek amphora from the Greek colony of Apulia, located in present day Italy. This amazing piece of ancient art dates between 375 and 350 BC and if of a Naiskos, or tomb scene. In side the elaborate tomb sits the dearly departed make youth facing right, but with head turned to the let, nude and sitting on his himation. He holds a patera in his left hand, a laurel headband i his right, two cloth bands just in front and to the rear and a slowring plant at his feet--a sign of triumph over death. As is typical of such Naiskoi scenes, the tomb and its inhabitant are both decorated in added white and yellow pigment. The reverse of the vessel shows a typical "lady of fashion" portrait facing left. Between the LOF and the Naiskos scene are traditionaly palmettes. A very large vessel at 22" tall, it is a choice specimen with small repair to rim. Attributed to the "H A Painter. Ex private German collection, ex Artemis Gallery, ex. South Dakota Collection and surely a fine addition to the most advanced collection of Greek pottery.
