| Venus was a major Roman goddess principally associated with love, beauty and fertility, the equivalent of the Greek goddess Aphrodite. These sculptures are therefore referred to in either form. This stunning marble torso of Aphrodite, from an old German collection of 60 yrs, is after a Hellenistic sculpture similar to the type of the Aphrodite of Syracuse, circa 2nd century BC, standing with weight on one leg and bending slightly forward. Height is 27" tall, with sturdy, custom mount. Needless to say, this piece of classical art has a jaw-dropping presence in a room or on a pedestal. Compare to an almost duplicate in Sotheby's, Dec 2003 (lot15A) which hammered at $153,600, or Sothebys June 1993 (lot 111) which hammered for $140,000. Cf. Bieber, "Sculpture of the Hellenistic Age", figs 34 & 35, Aquilea, "Sculpture Romane", no 31. | |
