We picked this crocodile up while traveling in Oaxaca during the 90's, along with several other interesting figural wood carvings. While we're unsure of the wood used for this carving, we do know that the grain shows very well in the sunlight, and the entire animal is carved from the same piece. Here we offer a very handsome example of a 'gigante' head, used in, and during, certain festivals and parades in Guatemala, often as the head of a 'giant' comprised of two men under a large cloak or cape. We're not sure if this head was actually used as such, though it seems it may have been. Purchased in Guatemala over 20 years ago, this is one of the last of two dozen in the collection to be let go. This piece measures just under one foot tall.

Very interesting woodblock print from Japan in the Ukiyo-e or Shunga style, in a custom bamboo frame. The figure in the image is not simply 'a figure' but rather an old man, with a baby on his back, who's flesh is comprised of innumerable writhing male figures in various states of dress. While it took us a minute or three, we are sure the little topknot and bow on the man's back, tucked into the folds of his yukata, are those of a baby, or toddler. This wonderful example of a Teponaztli was acquired in Solala, Guatemala in the early 90's. Purchased directly from the performer, and likely creator, shortly after a village ceremony; this piece carries a hand carved inscription reading: Grupo Zijax Santiago Atitlan 3/16/81. 'Survivor' is a near-apocalyptic vision of Darwinian struggles taking place within, and in spite of, man's attempts to recreate his environment. We purchased this piece during the early 1990's in Solola, Guatemala. An ideal piece of furniture for any decor, this practical cedar chest from Guatemala is perfect for storing bedding and textiles. Condition is very nice, with a lovely acquired patina, and solid construction. The lid's panels are slightly seperated, as the photo shows, but the integrity of the piece is not compromised. We purchased this piece in Guatemala a couple of decades ago. At around 6 feet long, and 2" wide, this blowgun came with some lead shot, since lost, but it retains the shot-pouch and three empty bullet casings that were attached as decoration (which were also used, perhaps, in the shaping of the projectile for the blowgun. Another of our skeletons in the closet, this is the smallest of the Guatemalan and Mexican skeletons we own. Standing about 3 1/2 feet tall, this little guy is somewhat different than the others in that he is somewhat more simian in appearance, and has a coating that is cracking on the skull's top. Excellent carved storyboard from Guatemala, depicting a merchant, a soldier and a monk or priest. We think the merchant could be a plantation owner as well. Hand carved some years ago from a large cut of a scarce jungle hardwood-rarely found in this size. This piece shows a range of color from reds to darkest browns. Here we have a very handsome wood carving from Guatemala depicting what is probably a jaguar. Carved by hand, and showing age and wear appropriate to an item that has been handled and enjoyed for years, this piece was acquired in Solala during the 1980s. Measuring 18" long, 8" wide, and 9" tall, this stout figure has a lot of charm. There is, besides the expected wear, some seperation along the underside probably caused by the dry climate here.
