An excellent Maya toad vessel from El Salvador, ca. 400 – 800 AD. This beautiful polychrome effigy is 6-3/4” long and depicts a Bufo Marinus toad, highly prized for the psychotropic substance secreted from its glands. The toad is molded in high relief along the sides of the bowl, with the hollow head containing a rattle. The body is orange, with the spots akin to jaguar pelt representations. The flared rim is decorated with typical Copador glyphs. Intact, with strong mineral deposits.

A large Pre-Classic Maya figural vessel from El Salvador, ca. 500 BC – 250 AD. This rare Usulután spouted effigy vessel is 6-1/2” high, 7-1/2” in diameter and is covered with the resist designs characteristic of the type. It depicts a female with arms molded in relief and a serene expression on her face, which is highlighted with white pigment. Intact, with good dendrites. Cf. An excellent Maya carved cylinder from El Salvador, ca. 400 – 800 AD. This large example is 7-1/2” high, 6” in diameter and is decorated with a pair of crisply carved figures. Each is wearing a complex headdress with flowing backrack and simple loincloth. The carved panels are separated by panels of circular designs, with stripes decorating the concave bottom. Intact, with strong mineral deposits on the cream slip.

An excellent Moche IV Portrait head from Peru, ca. 450 – 550 AD. This eerie example is 7-1/2” high and depicts an ancestor in skull form. The jutting jaws display teeth and the eyes are deeply sunken into the head. He is adorned with a fancy headdress and ear plugs, with all of the details enhanced with black and white pigment. Great presence.
