A superb Moche gadrooned vessel from Peru, ca. 400 700 AD. This fine olla is 6-1/2 high and is decorated with a spotted feline on each of its four lobes. They are painted in red over cream slip and display a long tongue protruding from tooth-studded mouths. The flared neck is covered with traditional geometric designs. In excellent condition, with good mineral deposits.

An excellent Maya polychrome cylinder from the Sula Valley of Honduras, ca. 500 800 AD. This corseted vessel is 5 high and 5-1/2 in diameter at the flared rim. It is decorated with a pair of characteristic glyph bands depicting deity heads and a central register with a stylized guilloche pattern executed in negative style against a black background. Vivid paint, strong mineral deposits, a couple professionally restored stress fractures are barely visible.

A fine Chimu version of Ai Apaec as the Maize God, Peru, ca. 1100 1450 AD. The vessel is 7 high and depicts the deity seated on a throne, with ears of corn protruding from his sides and head. He is also holding a strand of other fruit in his hands. While this figure looks like he has the fangs typically associated with Ai Apaec, they are not properly placed and look more like the artisan copied the Moche version without having the context of the original sculpture. A striking Moche IV bottle from Peru, ca. 450 550 AD. It is 10-1/4 high and is decorated with an assortment of traditional weapons bundles. Each bundle has a shield with a different design, a war club and atlatl spears. The upper register consists of typical geometric step-fret designs. A marvelous Maya tetrapod plate from the Ulua Valley of Honduras, ca. 400 800 AD. This gorgeous polychrome example is 10 in diameter and features a running deer motif, which is surrounded by bands of glyphic burial pyramid designs. The hollow legs are executed in the form of peccary heads and the appliquι turtle head and feet at the base rim communicates that the bowl represents the world of the living, as in Maya mythology the turtle is credited with carrying the world on its back. A large Chupicuaro bowl from Mexico, ca. 300 100 BC. This finely made example is 9 in diameter and is adorned with a highly burnished red rim, small appliquι handles and loops that were most likely designed to help secure a cover. In perfect condition, with strong mineral deposits, interior calcification and root marks. Museum deaccession.

This fine example is 6-3/4" high and represents a phytomorphic form, probably a pumpkin, on a flared pedestal base, which is decorated with pyramid symbols characteristic of the type.
