Nayarit Dignitary
A massive Nayarit figure from West Mexico, ca. 200 BC – 300 AD. This superb Ixtlan del Rio male figure is 15-3/4” high and is depicted standing. He is adorned with a beautifully decorated headdress, enormous nose ornament, painted necklaces and the characteristic multiple ear ornaments. The teeth are incised into the open mouth. In his left hand he is holding a spiked fan-like object, recognized as a symbol of authority reserved for members of the elite. Overall in excellent condition, with great paint, nice mineral deposits and just minor repairs.
