Nopiloa Deity Figure
A magnificent Nopiloa deity figure from Vera Cruz, Mexico, ca. 600 – 900 AD. It is 11-1/2” high and depicts a deity with the head of a jaguar. He is posed standing, with arms held to the sides and is wearing an elaborate ceremonial scarf and knotted belt. A similar knotted ornament is seen at the back of his neck. The figure is attached to a 5” diameter incensario bowl, which held coal for burning offerings. The opening on his back would allow the smoke to rise through the interior body cavity and exit via the open mouth and ear perforations. Overall in superb condition, with good mineral deposits and remnants of decorative stucco.
