| An excellent Maya boundary marker from Guatemala, ca. 400 – 800 AD. It is 9-3/4” high and is carved from dark gray stone with reddish encrustation. The figure is portrayed with a Mohawk coif, enormous ear ornaments and is holding an object, perhaps a rattle, in each hand. The protruding eyes and wide open mouth create an eerie visage of an eternal scream, perhaps intended as a warning against trespassers or a welcome to the Underworld. It has a very strong presence. Mounted on custom stand. | ||
