| An exceptional Maya Monkey bowl from El Salvador, ca. 400 – 800 AD. This large example is 8-5/8” in diameter and features four animated monkeys appearing to speak to each other. They are separated by intricate glyphic or floral emblems and encircle a central area that has the outline of an unfinished figure in it. Above the monkeys is a band of guilloche designs with jaguar spots and the rim band consists of trapezoidal faces with backward C scrolls and date symbols. The interior is painted with a band of large Copador glyphs surrounding a central solar or celestial symbol. In excellent condition, with strong mineral deposits. | ||
