Nazca Cargador Effigy
An excellent Nazca figural effigy from Peru, ca. 300 – 500 AD. It is 7-1/4” high and depicts a female cargador. She is posed seated, with legs crossed and hands held to the chest. A large cargo basket is supported with slings crossed over her forehead, her fingers are bound and one hand appears to be bleeding. The overall dark tones may indicate a nighttime scene portraying an exhausted laborer not yet done with the day’s chores.

Cf. Kroeber “The Archaeology of Nazca Peru”, page 214.
