Gallinazo - Viru Feline Effigy
A wonderful Gallinazo - Viru zoomorphic effigy from Peru, ca. 1 - 100 AD. This magnificent example is 10-1/2" long and depicts a feline standing in an alert position. The eyes are virtually popping out of his head, the huge bat ears are perked and the open mouth displays a row of large teeth. The bowl on its back is most likely meant to show that he is a nocturnal messenger carrying an offering to the spirits. In excellent condition, with nice mineral deposits, lots of the characteristic negative resist paint and just a minor repair.
