Moche Figure of a Drunk
A wonderful Moche III – IV figural vessel from Peru, ca. 400 – 500 AD. This beautifully detailed example is 9” high and depicts a seated drunk. In Moche iconography drunks would often be depicted in simian form, derided for their socially unacceptable behavior. In this case, an elaborately attired individual is posed seated, clasping a large chicha jar with hands and feet. He is wearing layered clothing, indicated is great detail with molding and paint, and is adorned with a complex headdress and ear ornaments. Overall in excellent condition, with strong paint and nice mineral deposits. Spout is professionally reattached.
