Moche Sacrifice Scene
An awesome Moche IV sacrificial scene from Peru, ca. 450 – 550 AD. This extraordinary stirrup bottle is 9” high and depicts a man bound to a tree trunk, being fed upon by a large bird (raven?). The horror expressed on his face is palpable and is emphasized by a hidden whistle, a rare feature on Moche ceramics. The detailing of the sculpture is masterful, including the rocks piled at the base of the trunk to keep it in place. The chamber features three large birds, painted in negative style, encircling the victim in an eerie dance macabre. Minor chipping to the spout tip, else perfect.

See Hoyle “Los Mochicas I”, page 195, for similar sculpture from the Herrera Museum.
