Nicoya Tripod Bowl
A marvelous Nicoya Polychrome tripod bowl from Costa Rica, ca. 800 - 1200 AD. This exceptional vessel is 6-1/2" in diameter and is elaborately decorated with two panels depicting finely detailed two-headed jaguars, separated by two panels representing the two-headed monster motif, an identifying characteristic of this type. The interior is decorated with a typical band of jaguar spots, executed in black over cream. In excellent condition, with vivid paint and strong dendrites. An exceptional example that shows the strong Maya influence on this style.

See "Art of Costa Rica" pages 115 - 123 from related examples from the Sackler Collection.
