Over 100 years
In 1908 Yamazoe Tenkodo, a gallery specializing exclusively in painting and calligraphy, opened in Kyoto. Over a hundred years later the Tenkodo is still in operation, run by the fourth generation of the Yamazoe family at our shop in the old Gion district. We are continuing to offer paintings and calligraphy to collectors, researchers, and museums, not only in Japan, but in the United States and across Europe as well.
When the Tenkodo first opened, we could only dream of reaching people the world over. The later addition of a black rotary-dial telephone made communication easier, and it still does! Now, with the launch of our web-site, we are able to welcome the world to our Kyoto gallery to view our collection of fine art. Some of the artists represented may not be immediately familiar to you, but we hope that, over time, our guests will come to enjoy learning about the whole range of artists and styles we collect.
Unmounted items
We offer a selection of paintings and calligraphy from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries in various traditional formats: mounted as scrolls and screens, or framed, along with unmounted pieces. On our web site, we will feature many of the unmounted items in a series of detailed images that will highlight the artistic merit of each piece, as well as the different materials (paper, silk, ink, etc.) and techniques used in its construction. And, with an unmounted piece, the new owner will have the aesthetic pleasure of choosing the most suitable mounting or framing!
