Nukina Su-o (Kaioku):1778-1863

Nanga painter.Son of a samurai in the service of the daimyo of Tokushima,Awa Province.Studied calligraphy and Kano style painting in Tokushima,Buddhism at Koyasan.Traveled to Nagasaki to study bunjinga under Hidaka Tetsuo;to Edo to study Confucianism and Chinese-style painting.Finally settled in Kyoto,establishing his own school.Taught Confucianism while working as a painter and writer;by the end of his life was the epitome of the classical Confucian scholar.One of the greatest calligrapher of the end of the Edo period ,an authority on the history of calligraphy.His landscape paintings are generally in the Chinese manner.
