A rare Irish George III silver tea caddy
A rare Irish George III silver tea caddy with a Chinese finial, dated 1804, made by Richard Sawyer of Dublin. The tea caddy is hallmarked on the interior with the seated Hibernia for Irish sterling silver, the crowned harp for Dublin, the date letter H for 1804, and a makerís mark of RS for Richard Sawyer. The underside of the lid is also marked with the seated Hibernia and the crowned harp. This remarkable object is engraved with the coat of arms of the Jephson-Norreys Baronets. Bernard Burkeís Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the United Kingdom, published in 1826 has a biography of the family and a picture of this coat of arms. They lived at the Castle Mallow in County Cork, Ireland. Unfortunately the Baronetcy is extinct. The caddy is in excellent condition with no repairs. The tea caddy was formerly part of the collection of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and was de-accessioned at auction.
