Very unique ensemble of rattan and bamboo splitting knives circa 60 to 90 years old. As with all old Thai things even their simple daily use items were done with style and beauty, nowadays this sort of thing is imported in mass quantities from China. These tools would have been used to cut and split rattan and bamboo etc to create everything from baskets, village house walls to fish traps. All the cutting edges are still sharp and usable, the last one an old split which is secured by ...click for details

Fine and rare Qing, Qianlong reign (1736-1795) shallow plate with rural landscape surrounded by dragons chasing a flaming pearl and clouds motif. This piece is very thinly potted with an inset footrim, if you pay close attention to the enlargements one can see a very a pale blue “wash” to accentuate the ripples on the water. There is a single 1cm firing crack as well as two tiny frits on the rim- this piece has been professionally cleaned as there was quite a bit of grime and dirt inside t ...click for details

Liao or Jin Dynasty red agate horse fitting, circa 10th CE – 12th CE carved in a domed “T” shape. Reference photos are from Sparkling Splendours and Noble Riders from Pines and Deserts- Artistic Legacy of the Qidan. According to the “Qidan” book “T” shaped horse fittings were rare amongst the Chinese during the Tang but similar items of this period were found in Southern Siberia of the time. The Liao (Khitan) and Jin (Jurchen) came out of what is now Mongolia and occupied large parts ...click for details

~Sold to France~ $320.USD/$2400.HKD

Fine and rare man’s ring from Ende, Flores, Nusa Tenggara (Lesser Sundas) Indonesia. I bought this in 1988 on a trip to study and buy some of their ikat weavings of which Flores is famous for (except for their recently discovered Hobbit fossils). The story on this is, it was dug up while putting in foundation poles for a village headman’s house, I see no reason to disbelieve this. At that time there were few foreigners traveling there so there wasn’t any sort of tourist market. This ...click for details

Colorful and quirky glass bangle fragments drilled and reworked into beads (two strands). These seem to have traveled far and wide. The strand without the small beads I bought in HK about 5 years ago and the other was purchased in Bangkok at about the same time. These originally came from Iran circa 6th CE - 7th CE which would make them late Sassanian Empire or early Islamic Era. I suspect these were brought in by Afghan traders who regularly make the rounds in Asia selling their beads ...click for details

Exceptionally fine old coconut scraper made of solid golden teak carved in the shape of a tiger. I purchased this on a recent trip to Northern Thailand, where the vendor said this was 200 years old and from Mandalay, Burma but I think 70 to 90 years old is a more reasonable dating, and might quite possibly be in the local Lanna style. This is one of the nicest examples I have seen in quite a few years. It is in all original condition, just as when it came out of the village. Usually these ...click for details

Very rare brown glass tube bead, circa 3rd BCE Late Warring States, the stratified raised “eyes” on this piece have worn off long ago. Absolutely of the period and would make an excellent study piece. Please note the reference photo in the last enlargement is from Early Chinese Glass by Simon Kwan.
