Very rare 19th century temple hanging. My interpretation of the symbolism in the design is the top border represents temple “wat” roof tops and the human shaped figures are characters from the Ramayana- well this is my best guess. That it is painstakingly hand stitched and framed in an old commercial cotton fabric defines it as a display piece of some age, which was only brought for festival occasions, or used as a backdrop for when an abbot would discourse on Buddhism.
