Finely made Cambodian red and black lacquered oval box, this is post Khmer Rouge i.e. made after 1979 and would probably best described as Arts and Crafts for the tourist market, usually sold as “antique’ after being artificially stressed. Unfortunately for the exception of textiles most traditional Khmer crafts have died out, as the availability of cheap plastic replacements from China and the average Cambodian citizen would not be able to afford items like this. Fanciful archaistic style Buddha- the pattern on the mandorla corresponds to a documented and dated Eastern Wei image from a Chinese publication I have, although it seems to emulate styles from other early periods as well, i.e. Qi, Tang etc. This piece is of no significant age, but taken in the context of its craftsmanship and artistic qualities it is a lovely piece. There are a couple of cracks in the bronze legs but no breakage. H: 13.3cm/5.2cm and W: 5.5cm/2.1.
Bronze Khmer, Baphuon period style image of Ganseh,- contemporary. There has been some repair to the base. Authentic Khmer bronzes usually have ceramic cores with traces of stucco and earth inside the base. Having said this it is a credible reproduction with an "of the period" style and patina. H: 6.5cm/2.6in.
