Fine and old Burmese lacquer betel box with black, red and green pan-bwa motif and “dancing monkey” figures. From personal experience (I have been traveling to Burma and it’s lacquer workshops since 1986), I can say all genuinely old Burmese lacquer items will show signs of ware such as cracks on the lacquer surface and chipping along the edged rims, as they were used on a daily basis in everyday life, pristine old lacquer pieces with no signs of use are as rare as, authentic Rembrandts. Basket from Northern Burma (probably Chin or Kachin culture). Approximately 40 or 50 years old. Increasingly difficult to source, this is a fine example of Burmese Tribal basketry. Condition: good natural polished feel to the surface, a couple of “breaks” on upper rim of basket. The hole at the handle lid may be intentional, as it has the same wear as the rest of the basket. Dimensions: 20cm/8in height 15.5cm/6.2in diameter.

Used also as a baby carrier this is part of a Khami woman’s traditional dress called a “htip paum”. Of the many I examined I chose this and the other one listed for their unusual pictorial patterns. The Khami are linguistically related to the Chin but are low land rice farmers and live in the Delta region of the Kaladan River in western Burma. Please note that the pattern is hand embroidered on one side only and not woven in. This piece is aprox 30 years or older and is excellent condition. The ...click for details

Alabaster Mandalay Buddha. Aprox. 50 to 80 years old, this is a very finely carved and well proportioned Buddha from Burma. It is not carved in the back because it was meant to sit in a niche and the back was never intended to be seen, typical of an older votive piece. The condition is excellent no chips or breakage with a nicely worn feel on the stone’s surface. Dimensions are 49.5cm/19.5in height and 37cm/14.5in x 23cm/9in at the bottom,

Li Woman’s Blouse and Skirt Ensemble. The Li people are only found on Hainan Island, China. The handmade cotton cloth on the blouse is new although the embroidered panels on the sleeve trims and lower side panels appear to be much older The zoomorphic “Naga” patterns are unique to the Li amongst the Hill People of Southern China. The skirt is comprised of three separately woven and embroidered bands, which have been finely stitched together. It is of interest to note on the skirt although the pa ...click for details
