Fine and rare pair of Yao (also known as Mien) shaman chops, used to “expedite messages to the Gods”. Reference “The Yao” by Jess Pourret pgs 206 & 207. These came from the Sino/Lao Fansipan Mountains border area and date circa 80 to 90 years old. Each seal has a minor age crack as may be seen in enlargements as well as metric scale.

Unusual mask from a Yunnan ethnic minority, possibly Qiang, Hani or Naxi. This piece is quite unique as it is carved from the end culm of a bamboo shoot, a material which I have never seen before for this sort of thing. Nuo rituals amongst the ethnic groups from this region are of an animist and shamanistic nature, I can’t add much more to it than that since the significance is usually specific to a particular shaman or village. This piece is circa 20 - 30 years old and is an authentic ritua ...click for details

Tibetan Buddhist “windhorse” woodblock with loads of auspicious symbols (trigrams, dorjes etc) for printing small prayer flags about 40 to 50 years old, still perfectly usable (I’ve thought of making cards with this but never got around to it). The “wind horse” has its origins the earlier Bon folk religion but has been incorporated to Tantric art for the past couple of hundred years. I’ve researched a few of interpretations of this symbol, which are quite complex so suffice to say it is to ...click for details

$200.

Intricately carved and rare fortune telling bamboo receptacle used for holding oracle sticks. I picked this up in a local market in Guangxi Province in China about 15 years and (in my opinion) is probably from a Yi group in Guizhou, to the north. The Zhuang, Yao and Miao are the most Sinicized of the minorities in this area. Most notably lacking on this piece are any signs of Chinese auspicious symbols or characters with the exception of the coin symbol (circle with square inside). The geo ...click for details
