Fine and rare old rattan basket from the Idu Mishmi ethnic group from Arunachal Pradesh, India. In India they are primarily animist but in China where they are known as the Lhoba have strong spiritual affiliations with Tibetan Buddhism, also it should be pointed out that the men are the principle basket weavers, while the women do the textiles. Well carved mask from Nepal. This is made from a heavy, densely grained hardwood (but stained a darker color); with an old Nepalese rupee set in the forehead and an animal hide goatee and toupee’. I really don’t know much about this piece other than it came from Nepal. It is very thoughtfully crafted, and not a massed produced tourist piece of chachke. There is one chip on the side, H: 23.5cm/9.2in and 15.5cm/6.1in.
