Unusual “talking head” from the Yao (aka Mien) ethnic minority, Northern Thailand, this piece was not meant to be part of a complete body. As far as I know the Yao do not have a tradition of puppetry so I am guessing this was probably a toy carved to amuse the kids, never seen anything like this before. Very well carved with an expressive face. Both the lower jar and upper face articulate by pulling the strings, obvious cracks, on the side approximately 40 or 50 years old, H: 16cm/6.2in

Good and authentic Sarawak (Borneo) Kayan ethnic group spirit mask. This was used only twice a year for rice planting and harvesting festivals (gawai), these gatherings were usually a good excuse for a party and celebration to encourage the spirits to ensure a good harvest. Looks to be carved from palm wood and has a good “use” inner patina. I picked this up in Kuching, Sarawak about 6 years ago; it was only one I saw of this type. Circa 40 to 50 years old. H: 19cm/7.5in and W: 1 ...click for details

Rare phallic charm from northern Thailand. This is the only one I have seen carved from an elephant’s tooth. Originally these were worn by men at the waist and were thought to protect the wearer from any harm to his penis and in a more general sense they also are believed to bring luck especially in terms of “wealth generating or protection”, so one might be kept in your cash box to increase your cash flow or a woman might keep one in her purse to prevent it being “snatched”. Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The bone handle, given its size, I am guessing to be from the leg of a muntjac (barking deer) and is most likely to be much older (circa 8 ...click for details

Nice old pair of Northern Thai woven bamboo baskets used for steaming and carrying rice. The basket on the left is used for steaming “sticky” or glutinous rice and is about 40 years old, H: 19cm/7.5in while the one on the right is older, circa 60 years, and is used to carry cooked rice into the fields. Sticky rice is the traditionally preferred staple in much of Northern Thailand and Laos, and is eaten with fingers. H: 22cm/8.6in.

Fine and rare Minangkabau bird trap. I bought this in the old Dutch hill station of Bukittinggi Sumatra, Indonesia in 1988 and it was old then, so a circa 50 years old is a reasonable attribution as far as age goes. The Minangkabau are a matrilineal ethnic group from West Sumatra and Malaysia i.e. the women inherit the property rather than the men and this group plays an important current role in Indonesian politics. This trap has two compartments, the rear compartment holds a female w ...click for details
