Post Mandalay “Jambupati” (in royal attire) lacquered Buddha from the Shan State Burma. From an Iconographical point of view this piece is quite rare- seated on a lotus base, supported by three elephants flanked by two horses, having a “wheel of law” mudra and flask in his lap. This is carved from a hardwood with no damage. At some point I am assuming this piece had ivory tusks and unisha finial as there are holes where they would have been. This point should be made, the term Shan is a gene ...click for details

Quirky big round ball of green glass; possibly sand cast, this would have been used to carve a Buddha image, from Northern Thailand. In the 1950s the Japanese started exporting mold cast glass images to Thailand and Laos so this practice died out around then. There is a Buddha in there waiting to be realized, otherwise it looks nice on the windowsill, especially when the sun shines through it. Weight 210grams D: 5.5cm/2.2in.

Elegant ebony wood carving of a Balinese beauty circa 1960 to 1970- possibly older. This was obviously created for the tourist market and panders to the Western ideal of the female form of the time. I traveled to Bali in the 80s and 90s and found their arts and crafts leaning more to the impressionist side, where figures looked like the Navi from Avatar. Given its hardness and cost, ebony is usually only given to master craftsman to carve from. I tried digging into the bottom with my trus ...click for details

Rare Mon Burmese Buddha. The Mon people have influenced almost all cultures in Southeast Asia from Thailand, Cambodia to Burma. To my knowledge the only place left where the Mon are allowed to exist with a distinct cultural identity are in the Thai refugee camps near Songklaburi, Three Pagodas Pass where they have fled the Burmese regime’s repression and have been tentatively allowed to settle. Current politics aside this is quite an interesting piece, incorporating both Shan and Burmese ...click for details

Old mask from East or Central Timor. The previous owner told me what well might be an apocryphal tale- that this was recovered from “secret hiding place” after a brush fire that was caused by a skirmish between Fretilin and the Indonesian Army during the 1970’s. I was in West Timor in the 1980s and saw plenty of new copies of Timorese masks, which were stuck with horsehair and smoked over a fire to give it an antiqued appearance. This piece shows a genuine smooth natural wear (front ...click for details

Alabaster Mandalay Buddha. Aprox. 50 to 80 years old, this is a very finely carved and well proportioned Buddha from Burma. It is not carved in the back because it was meant to sit in a niche and the back was never intended to be seen, typical of an older votive piece. The condition is excellent no chips or breakage with a nicely worn feel on the stone’s surface. Dimensions are 49.5cm/19.5in height and 37cm/14.5in x 23cm/9in at the bottom,
