Good Southern Song (1127 CE - 1279 CE) celadon saucer with carved lotus pattern in high relief from the Zhejiang, Longquan kiln. There is one hairline crack that transverses the body (which disappears in the center) and comes out the other side, noted in enlargements as well some normal glaze cracalature. This is a shipwreck recovery piece which has been desalinated and cleaned, the under side has a mat texture but the upper side still retains much of its original “shine”. Rare Mon Burmese Buddha. The Mon people have influenced almost all cultures in Southeast Asia from Thailand, Cambodia to Burma. To my knowledge the only place left where the Mon are allowed to exist with a distinct cultural identity are in the Thai refugee camps near Songklaburi, Three Pagodas Pass where they have fled the Burmese regime’s repression and have been tentatively allowed to settle. Current politics aside this is quite an interesting piece, incorporating both Shan and Burmese ...click for details

Good Jizhou glazed jar with lid circa Southern Song to Yuan Dynasties. Please note that the lid and body are slightly different as the lid’s glaze lacks the cracalature of the body with more of “tea dust” type glaze. Possibly from the same kiln- “matched but not married”. Having said this they look good together and unless closely scrutinized its hard to notice. There is a small chip and tiny frit on the lid, otherwise in good condition. H: 11cm/4.2in and D: 11cm/4.2in.

Fine and rare circa early 20th century Yi minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan a few years ago. As the Yi and Bai are related ethnic groups it is possible that this is a Bai piece, but since there is really nothing I can find documenting Bai lacquer on leather making traditions I am assigning this to the Yi who do and also live in close proximity to the Bai. Excellent condition. H: 5cm/2in and D: 11cm/4.2in.

Rare and authentic antique Burmese Shan late 19th betel box. This piece is sold unapologetically “as is”, and would make an ideal “anatomical” study piece for anyone with a genuine interest in the art of Burmese lacquer making. Please note: I have put a single grain of rice (long grain) in some of the enlargements for perspective to appreciate the fine craftsmanship that went into making such a simple piece. The two halves fit into one another with same precision as a piston and cyl ...click for details

Quirky and rare ensemble of seven tobacco pipes from the Lawai ethnic group of Southern Laos,(please read the notes under enlargements for description of materials on each piece). The simple bamboo ones are used by the women of this group while the more ornate ones are used by the men. Although old pottery pipes of Burmese/Thai/Khmer origin are fairly common, these are the first in this clay I have ever run across. Three of the ceramic ones are Yixing wares from Jiangsu, China, which were ...click for details

Folk Buddha from Laos carved from hardwood possibly teak. The expression on his face is sublime. I usually don’t go into subjective hyperbole unless I really mean it. These were carved in rural Laotian communities as a devotional act, rather than to adorn temples or put on an altar. Anyway even with the obvious damage I think in terms of Ethnographic Art this piece is exceptionally fine. Late 19th CE, H: 46cm/18in and W: 15cm/5.9in.

Fine and rare Minangkabau bird trap. I bought this in the old Dutch hill station of Bukittinggi Sumatra, Indonesia in 1988 and it was old then, so a circa 50 years old is a reasonable attribution as far as age goes. The Minangkabau are a matrilineal ethnic group from West Sumatra and Malaysia i.e. the women inherit the property rather than the men and this group plays an important current role in Indonesian politics. This trap has two compartments, the rear compartment holds a female w ...click for details
