Esoteric bell with a bear tooth incisor handle. This piece came from Northern Laos but the bell is of Sino/Tibetan origin and quite old, over 100 years- probably much older. Due to the red synthetic yarn that holds an old Chinese coin as a clapper my best guess is that it was used by the Yao/Mien people for Taoist rituals but it might be Miao/Hmong, who are also a large ethnic group in this region. The bear tooth is also old as it has a fine aged ivory color and patina (unless the bear w ...click for details

Fine old Laotian Buddha folk image carved from teak with the touching the earth gesture “bhumiparsa. Lao folk or “primitive” Buddhas were made as acts of faith by common people and placed in caves or under trees rather than to adorn a temple. This along with the other recent 5 Buddha folk image listings was sourced in Mae Sai, Thailand, about 6 years ago. Good condition, circa 60 to 80. H: 29cm/11.5in.

Weird and wonderful pack horse fitting made from goat or antelope horn. I sourced this in Northern Thailand recently and is probably of Jiin Haw origins, (Muslim Chinese traders), who have plied the old caravan trade routes from Yunnan to Chiang Mai for hundreds of years. Difficult to date something like this- definitely old, lets say -80 years. L: 14cm/5.5in. Nice worn patina, there is a burned hole on this, don’t know if it was for a reason or accidental.

Exceptionally fine old coconut scraper made of solid golden teak carved in the shape of a tiger. I purchased this on a recent trip to Northern Thailand, where the vendor said this was 200 years old and from Mandalay, Burma but I think 70 to 90 years old is a more reasonable dating, and might quite possibly be in the local Lanna style. This is one of the nicest examples I have seen in quite a few years. It is in all original condition, just as when it came out of the village. Usually these ...click for details

Quirky and rare ensemble of seven tobacco pipes from the Lawai ethnic group of Southern Laos,(please read the notes under enlargements for description of materials on each piece). The simple bamboo ones are used by the women of this group while the more ornate ones are used by the men. Although old pottery pipes of Burmese origin are fairly common, these are the first in this style and size I have ever run across. Three are made from a clay which closely resembles the Yixing wares of Jia ...click for details

Fine and rare Buddha, from Laos- Early Late Period circa 1520-1777 CE described by Somkiart Loptecharat in his book Lao Buddha: The Image and its History as “the Golden Age of Lao Buddha images”. This Buddha has a good “white bronze” patina and in excellent condition. Overall Lao Buddhas are very rare compared to Thai ones as they were never made in the enormous quantities that Thai Buddhas were as well as reflecting the individuality of the craftsmen to a greater extent. This one is ...click for details
