Iban Mandau
~Sold to the Netherlands, dank u wel!~ $550.USD

Fine and rare Dayak sword circa late 19th century. Total L: 66cm/26in, blade L: 38cm/14.9in. The wood handle and scabbard are exquisitely carved and the blade (an old replacement) has a very sharp cutting edge. During my last visit to Sarawak in 2005 I did not see any genuinely antique complete swords for sale. This piece was acquired from an Australian collection last year and I suspect that most heirloom swords are now only in overseas collections. Although much is written about Iban swords being used just for head hunting common sense would have me believe that these were used more often than not as an everyday tool in agriculture and clearing jungle vegetation.
