| Very rare and possibly one of a kind, Tang Dynasty suffused glazed bowl with four Jun type splashes in cavetto. Both the Tang Dynasty suffused phosphatic and Song Dynasty Jun glazes originated in Henan Province, the heavy “earlobe” glaze drips as well as the largish bubble bursts near the surface are characteristic of the Jun glaze but the hard, heavy and smooth clay and rimless foot places firmly within the Tang period. I suppose you could call this “proto Jun”. Now the bad news: it originally had a big crack in the center of the cavetto clear through the body which has since been repaired. As near as I can tell the bowl did not break in half but had the various chips of glaze that broken out and carefully set back in like a jigsaw puzzle and re-glued. There does not seem to be any repainted areas however there are areas where a chip could not be found to insert have been filled in the center of the foot and cavetto. Please observe enlargements 1,5,8,9, and 11 to see repair and a couple of unfilled small chips. This is an amazing piece that needs to be handled to fully appreciate the subtle texture of the glaze and clay. D: 19.2cm/7.6in and H: 9.7cm/3.9in. | |||||||||||||||
