description: Extremely rare Southern Song Dynasty (1127 CE – 1279 CE) cup with sancai type tortoiseshell glaze. Usually tortoiseshell glazes are associated with the Jizhou kiln in Jiangxi Province, but the well defined crisply cut footrim, and sancai type glazing technique indicate this from an entirely different region. A similar item was auctioned by Bonham’s, London July 2005 described as “A Sichuan Jizhou-style tortoiseshell-glazed bowl Southern Song Dynasty” with a 4000-6000 GBP estimate. This type is sometimes called Tuchan ware. This item has been professionally cleaned with an application of clear lacquer on one section to minimize the visual effect of a single hairline crack as well as filled chip on the rim (both noted in enlargements), there is also a single tiny glaze frit not noted. Please note there are lovely subtle dark green tones which did not photograph well. D: 8.5cm/3.4in and H: 4.9cm/1.9in
