Rare Hopi Palhik Mana Kachina Doll
A Hopi polychromed wood kachina circa 1890. Depicting a Palhik Mana, standing on squat legs, wearing a manta, painted with red, blue, white, and black pigments, the classic sack mask, decorated in similar colors, with a hatched rainbow on the chin, rectangular eyes set wide apart and overhanging browline, surmounted by an elaborate openwork tableta, composed of a series of terraced panels joined together with twine, decorated with a series of semi-circle and line elements. Similar examples by the same carver can be found in Kachina-Figuren der Hopi-Indianer, by Horst Hartmann, figure no. 65, 66, 67 (mis-identified as Shalako Mana) of the Museum für Volkerkunde Berlin. 20 3/4 inches tall.
