Art Deco engagement ring with diamonds and sapphire
A touch of history ... Most elegant Art Deco engagement ring with diamonds and pain du sucre sapphire.

This must be one of the most elegant rings we have ever had. Made somewhere in the twenties of the last century and sold in France as it carries the French hallmark for jewelry made outside of France. The center is set with a high domed cabochon natural sapphire. Such sapphires are called "pain du sucre" which is French for sugarloaf. (A sugarloaf was the traditional form, a tall gently-tapering cylinder with a conical top, in which refined sugar was exported from the Caribbean and eastern Brazil from the 17th to 19th centuries.)

Antique jewelry object group: rings
Country of origin: unknown
Style: between Edwardian and Art Deco
Style specifics: As for its elegant design, this jewel has the finesse of an Edwardian piece reacting gracefully against the very geometrical forms of Art Deco that was strongly influenced by Cubism. However, because both Edwardian and Art Deco styles were contemporaries of each other, we sometimes notice pieces - like this one - that carry both influences.
Period: ca. 1920
Material: 14K white gold
Extra information:

engagement ring - An engagement ring is a finger ring of no generally accepted form that is given by a man to his fiancée as a token of marriage engagement, in the manner of the earlier betrothal ring, and indistinguishable in form or style. In recent years such rings have normally been set with a gemstone, usually a diamond (or any stone other than the ill-reputed opal), as a solitaire, of varying sizes, cuts, styles, and cost, but in the 19th century some were set with a pearl. In the same century the custom arose in England of separate engagement ring and wedding ring, and in very recent years such rings have sometimes been made en suite as a matching pair of similar style. In recent years, antique gemstone engagement rings are rapidly gaining in popularity.

Diamonds: 20 various cut diamonds, old mine brilliant cut and single brilliant cut diamonds (also called 8/8) all together with a total estimated weight of approx. 0.40 crt. and 26 rose cut diamonds. We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts. Note: All diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
Total diamond weight: approx. 0.40 crt. (without the rose cut diamonds)
Precious stones: one pain de sucre cabochon cut natural sapphire
Birthstones: Diamond is the birthstone (or month stone) for April and sapphire for September.
Hallmarks: Although it carries a typical French control mark representing an owl, we cannot be sure it is actually French as the owl was also used for items in finished condition that were brought to be examined by the French Assay office (the eagle’s head was used for items brought in unfinished).
Condition: excellent condition
Weight: 3.20 gram (2.06 dwt)
Ring size Continental: 51 & 16¼ , Size US 5½ , Size UK: K½
Resizing: Free resizing, but because of the the way the ring is made, we cannot guarantee to make it on every size; so please ask in advance (only for extreme resizing we have to charge).
