Margaret Fitzhugh Browne (1884-1972). Col. James Barnes
Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches, 19 3/4 x 23 3/4 inches with frame, signed lower right "Margaret Fitzhugh Browne". The famed portrait painter, Margaret F. Browne, was the sister-in-law of the sitter, who was married to her sister Brooks Browne. This portrait descended in the Browne family and was reportedly painted on the Princeton, New Jersey estate of Colonel Barnes (1866-1936). Born to wealth and privilege, Barnes conducted an expedition across Africa from the mouth of the Congo to the Indian Ocean in 1914, making a photographic record of the wildlife for the American Museum of Natural History. This expedition resulted in the book "Through Central Africa From West to East". Barnes wrote several other books, including an autobiography, "From Then Till Now", published in 1934, 2 years before his death. This portrait was acquired from a family member and will be accompanied by a copy of the autobiography. This painting was exhibited in a major retrospective of Browne's work at the Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, June-September, 2011.
