Gilbert Tucker Margeson (1852-1949). Crashing Surf.

Oil on board, 20 x 29 3/4 inches, 27 x 36 3/4 framed, signed "G.T. Margeson", lower left. Unlike his fellow master of "crashing waves", Frederick Waugh, who was a world-traveller, Margeson, either from preference or due to the pressures of making a living, observed the sea from his adopted home, Rockport, Massachusetts on Cape Ann. He operated a variety store, worked as the town tax collector and is credited with opening the first artist studio there in 1873, beginning the trend that would eventually bring a veritable tide of artists to that scenic town and transforming an old fishing shack into a calendar icon as "Motif Number One". Margeson loved the sea in its wilder moods, perhaps reflecting his Nova Scotia origins. This painting, with its daring color and dramatic movement, is a fine example of his best work. The painting is presented in a custom frame by Philip Angus MacKenzie.
