| Oil on board, 8 x 12 inches, signed and dated on period paper label "Werboockooven, 1837", affixed to verso. Belgian-born in 1802 into a family of artists (his father and brother were painters), Louis was the first to specialize in marine subjects. His reputation had been established by the time of his participation in the Paris Salon of 1842. He died in Brussels in 1889 at the advanced age of 87. This jewel-like painting depicts a 24-gun American brig flying a red and blue pennant, with the ghost of an American flag midships. The plethora of tiny sails in the distance and the white cliffs to the right would seem to indicate a location off the Dover coast of England. The work is strikingly detailed, with individual figures identifiable on deck and in the rigging. The painting, executed in the first year of Queen Victoria's long reign, stands favorable comparison with the work of the Buttersworths. | ||
