| Oil on panel, 12 x 17.25 inches, 18 x 23 inches framed, signed "Will Malbon" lower left. This c. 1840 canine portrait deserves comparison with the earlier work of Paulus Potter and George Stubbs and with the later work of Landseer. The detail of the hound is anatomically exacting and the expression of personality is profound. Little is known of Malbon, descended from a Norman/English family of the Midlands. His work is extremely rare and includes a well-known portrait of a bull-terrier named "Topsey". | ||
