Ido-gata Hagi chawan made to resemble a katakuchi pouring vessel. Glazed in a milky, creamy pink to beige tinged Hagi glaze, this chawan has a “ceremonial” spout applied, harkening back to the early days of chanoyu when found objects played the essential role in the ceremony. This form is common in Hagi-yaki and was made by a number of the veteran Hagi potters, including Hatano Shigetsu.

This rare Ido chawan is glazed in a milky ash, Hagi style glaze and was presumably made at the kiln of the Tenryu-ji temple (Kyoto-yaki) as it bares the seal of the kiln. The clay was made using ground roof tile, a piece brought back from China which is explained in the accompanying paperwork provided with the chawan. This chawan has an elegant form and well addressed kodai, foot and has red over glaze (aka-e) decoration of the kanji “JU” and the cipher of Seki Bokuo. ...click for details

Large classical Oni-Shino chawan by Kajiura Soshu (b. 1916). Showing a wide array of surface variations including a thick Shino together with large areas of an iron red glaze with the face of the bowl being covered in deposited ash from an intense wood firing. The interior has wonderful luminescent iron together with areas of Shino cells and and also has a ground down clamshell where something was stood inside the chawan during the firing, a common occurrence in this style of pottery. . ...click for details
