Large and playful Oribe chawan by contemporary pottery phenom; Ishii Takahiro. This summer, natsu-wan, style chawan is glazed in Ishii’s own Oribe glaze that shimmers with iridescence and allows plenty of the tsuchi-aji to peak through as he glazed the pot. Balanced on a well addressed circular kodai, this chawan is equally at home displayed or in the hand. The form and intentional furrows make for a tactical experience while the interior of the bowl is smooth and ready to fufill its primary function as a teabowl.
Ishii was an apprentice to Kakurezaki Ryuichi, the Bizen master, for a number of years and his works are highly sought after and his shows sell out in minutes. His work covers a lot of ground from his black Kuro glaze to Oribe, Ash glazed and Gold glazed pieces. This Oribe chawan is an exceptional piece by him and his current prices for chawan start at over $700! This boxed chawan is in perfect, brand new and unused condition and measures a robust 6" X 5.25" X 2.8". Note the unique and idiosyncratic style of calligraphy on the box, it is Ishii’s own creation. |
