LARGE MOMOYAMA STYLE SHINO VASE BY HAYASHI SHOTARO
This large, bold and classical Shino vase was made by Mino legend and veteran potter, Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947). Thrown out of traditional Mino mogusa clay, the throwing is both a blend of both casual and power. The form has areas of iron decoration under the beautiful and active white Shino glaze with lots of craters and crawling characteristic of great Shino pottery. The vase is an amalgam of classic Momoyama inspired design and Shotaro's genius for modern form and pushing the edges of contemporary tradition. The pot measures 10.25" X 6.25" x 6", is in perfect condition and comes complete with its original signed box. In person this vase displays an immense presence, is much larger than the dimensions would indicate and has a noble totemic posture that very few can duplicate.

Hayashi Shotaro is one of Japan's finest Mino tradition potters whos works in Shino, Oribe , Haiyu and Ki-Seto are second to none and many consider him a genius of modern Momoyama inspired ceramics. Born in 1947, he first apprenticed with his elder brother, Kotaro before setting up his own studio and kiln in 1974. He has been collected by a great number of public and private institutions as well as private collections around the world. Hayashi has exhibited widely, has won many awards and is published in a wide variety of catalogues and books on ceramics and modern craft/art.
