This is a very important Puerto Rican Santo--made by a class of carvers in the first part of the 19th century known as the Erudito--these santeros were under the direct influence of priests who were educated and trained in Spain- as these priests died out and their inluence disappeared--the santo carvings became more provencial and yes, less erudite-- tropical hardwood carving of a saint-some losses-orignal paint--along his historical journey a Puerto Rican made him a fine straw hat and pig tail ...click for details

Puerto Rican carved tropical hardwood santo-St Gerome-has the skull at his foot-the cross in his hand--and covered in bloody stigmata-base replaced-good sized-10.5 inches high with a 4 by 5 inch base--some scratches on his bloody body and bald head--the santero is unknown but he sure liked to carve backbones--piece is over 100 years old-and is a household saint--St Gerome Santo was rarely carved by Puerto Rican santeros
