STANDING BUDDHA
Height 79 cm – with base 96 cm
Copper alloy, crusty patina
Burma, Pagan 11th – 13th century - Metallographic Test available.
The Buddha is dressed with a tunic that reveals the shape of his rather feminine body and, over it, a veil that falls from the wrists forming rhythmic folds. His left hand holds the ribbon used to tie up the veil, and the right hand is in abhaya mudra, the gesture of protection and benediction. Wooden carved handle and scabbard with several decorating motifs, dark patina from use. The bent blade is made from very sharp steel from a naginata blade.
Traditionally these knifes were given by the bride to the groom on their wedding day.
