DESCRIPTION: A large rectangular Chinese inkstone, carved from a single piece of reddish stone called “She Red.” This “boot” shaped stone has a large grinding area for preparing a quantity of ink with the well located at one end for holding the water. On the underside base of this handsome stone are carved three Chinese characters, not translated. Good condition with a few minor chips around the edges. The fashion of the day included large elaborate combs placed in upswept hair, and this one is a real beauty! DESCRIPTION: A skillfully carved and quite charming ivory netsuke of a furry seated bear with legs crossed and tongue outstretched licking his right paw. The detail on this carving is quite outstanding as even the bear’s canine teeth can be seen on either side of the small extended tongue, and the bear’s fur is carefully and naturally depicted.
