DESCRIPTION: A beautifully rendered ink and gilt painting on silk depicting the Lohan Chieh-po-ka. In Buddhist tradition there are Eighteen Lohan, also called Arhat or Arahat, who are the personal disciples of Buddha. Chieh-po-ka, or Gobaka the Protector, is the ninth Lohan. Tradition is that he was stationed on the Gandhamadana mountain with a retinue of 900 arhats, and is usually represented in contemplation with a fan in his hand. DESCRIPTION: A fine Chinese hanging scroll painting with a monochromatic study of bamboo, rendered in quick, bold strokes. Two lines of Chinese calligraphy appear on the left, most likely a poem related to the bamboo, with the artist’s seal at the bottom. An additional red seal is on the right, possibly a collector’s seal. Very good condition with no tears; age unknown. DIMENSIONS: Actual painting: 46” long (117 cm) x 13” (33 cm) wide.
