Carved Chinese Bamboo Brush Pot, Qing Dynasty
DESCRIPTION: An exceptional bamboo brush pot featuring a display of deeply carved bok choy leaves (Chinese cabbage) on one side and a long, well carved inscription on the reverse. The cabbage carvings are deeply hollowed and three dimensional, and the bamboo surface has an overall beautiful dark blond patina. In Chinese, the word for cabbage sounds very similar to the word that means prosperity, and therefore the cabbage motif is often used as a symbol of wealth and good fortune. The superficial splitting to the outside layer of the thick bamboo speaks to the obvious age of this pot, which I would place in the early to mid Qing Dynasty. DIMENSIONS: 6.75” High x 5.75” Wide.
